An afternoon well spent at West Elm

Hello Hello Everyone! Welcome to another blog post! This post is of our trip  to the furniture store West Elm located on Yonge Street.  West Elm  is a furniture store that focuses on modern designs for the home and office. West Elm is based out of Brooklyn, NY and they pride themselves in being a company that designs majority of their furniture and decor items in-house, carefully selecting organic, handcrafted and sustainably sourced materials. They have a ton of cool stuff so join me as I check out some neat items in the photos below.

Woah look at this entrance!!!

These chairs were fantastic!

They have a variety of options for office furniture and decor.

These lighting fixtures are so unique!

After walking through the entire West Elm store and seeing all the great stuff they had, we had worked up quite an appetite and so we  had lunch at the Italian Restaurant La Vecchia which is located on Yonge Street.  Here I am standing outside the doors.

Check out this cool door and all the details!

It is always so interesting to see how restaurants have fashioned their spaces with decor items.

Some bread and condiments to start us off for lunch

The National Home Show

Hola Amigos! Today is a superb day as I get to share some photos from a fun trip to the 2018 National Home Show that took place last month. This year the national show also included Canada blooms! So us attendees were able to check out both shows.

The show was buzzing with people!

An arrangement of doors to welcome us!

These massive jacuzzi's were quite a sight!

I came across this "Exercise Garden" by Otium and thought it was genius! They even had a punching bag of which I took a turn at kicking!

All smiles ready to explore all the show has to offer

It was hilarious to see these funny shoes at the Home show lol.

A self driving lawn mower!

Fake Turf and Greenery on display

Real Plants on display

The exterior doors we saw at this booth were neat!

Red doors!!!

Barbecues make me long for summer even in my winter coat!

This was one of my favourite exhibits

This one  below was for sure my favourite exhibit of all! I love when so much thought is put into an exhibit!

How beautiful is this chandelier!

Another beautiful feature was this sculpture

This company made cool fold out beds!

Standing pretty under the water fountain!

Very interesting landscape Exhibit featuring Jack Nicholson and "Where's Johnny???". Jack's face scared me a bit hence the awkward smile on my face lol!

Checking out the work of a landscape contractor

These canopy structures were also some of my favourite things at the show!

Practicing my domestic skills

Enjoying beautiful abstract art

A landscape installation

Green green everything!!!

My signature kick to the sky!

Walking through more landscape installations!

This company had really nice items for the bathroom

They really work!

Yellow umbrellas bringing a little sunshine to the winter climate

A great design of a barbeque.

We ended off the show watching a fashion show whereby the outfits were made of plants and flowers. It really took a lot of creativity for the designers to produce such work!

The star of the show! Everyone wanted a photo with this design.

So that brings me to the end of the show. Now am running away with Colin Firth for a coffee.  I wish you a goodbye from the National Home Show. Till next time, wishing you lots of joy!

Around the Neighbourhood

Hello! Welcome to another instalment of my blog! In my last post I had given you a tour of our new KMA Design group office space. This time around in this particular post  I am showing you around the North York neighbourhood where my office is located!

We are quite close to the stunning Hullmark Centre on (Sheppard and Yonge) which is a mixed use building and comprises of two towers. A modern building which has now come to define the intersection of shepherd and Yonge, this building was designed by Kirkor Architects and Planners.

It was great to have Marcela in town!

A view of the striking Emerald Park towers. It was designed by Rosario Vacaralli and was completed in 2015. The two towers are 32 and 42 stories and sit on a shared 3 story podium.

Another view of the Emerald Park Towers (left). 25 Sheppard Avenue W. can be seen on the right.

Walking towards the Whole Foods market to grab lunch.

Ahaha this photo of Sifu Joe and I is funny. I think our martial  training has resulted in us being super coordinated even in our laughs lol

A team photo!

Here we are in front of the landscape of the Hullmark Centre

On this particular day we went into the Hullmark Centre where a whole foods store is located. Here we had a delicious lunch with the team.

The cafeteria style setting with the glass curtain walls make for an inviting place to have a quick lunch or snack.

The industrial look of the whole foods cafeteria with the exposed pipes is quite neat.

After lunch we explored the rest of the whole foods store. Here I am admiring the plants on sale.

Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables were on display in the fruits and veggies aisle.

I get so excited when I am around fruits and veggies lol

IMG_6897.jpg

Weighing some apples to take home with me!

These tomatoes look so fresh!!!

They sell everything at this store including fashionable scarves!

Looking for some great coffee beans? Then look no further! You can find a great selection at Whole Foods!

When I say they sell everything. I really meant it! Here I am with some plush toys! How fun!

Bakery treats on display.

Gelato! Mmm.....

At the Olive and Antipasti Bar.

So many varieties of cheese to choose from.

Bread on display.

This store has lots of samples to taste. Here I am trying a delicious chocolate cookie!

All types of dry cooking products for sale in bulk.

Pretzels and other baked goods freshly baked!

it wouldn't be a whole foods store without the seafood section.

Walking back towards the office

Standing in front of the Emerald Park Towers. They may not be everyone's style but they are certainly iconic.

The team had to take a snap here too!

Walking back to the office. Though there currently is a lot of construction going on there are still lots of strip plazas with small businesses in the area. It is really neat to see all the changes that are taking place and the differences between the old and the new.

A view of our office building against the blue sky.

Taking a moment to Imagine all the future possibilities!

The Toronto Centre for the Arts is situated just behind the building our office is located in. It is a performing arts centre that was designed by Canadian Architect Eberhhard Zeidler. Currently the space is host to musicals, theatre productions and other various types of performance arts. I will have to take some time out of my busy schedule to check out a show one of the days.

This is a pic  of our photographer Karimah who lended me her camera and gave me tips on capturing portraits that speak to the soul. Here is my attempt at taking a photo which I think is  probably the best photo I ever captured.

I love these next set of images! Check out the reflections in the building. It really has a New York oops  I mean North York Feel!

The Toronto Centre for the Arts looks amazing in the evening/ night time!

This brings me  to the end of this blog post. Thank you for taking the time to read this latest entry on my blog. Until next time have a lovely one!

Caro and I at Edwards Gardens

Hola Everyone! Today I am sharing  a few wonderful photos from a photo session I did with my incredible daughter Carolina! I would like to dedicate this blog post to Caro who has been a loving daughter and life companion. She constantly inspires me to be the best version of myself and to be a human being who respects and celebrates life; making sure to treat others the way I  would expect to be treated.  Thank you Caro!

We took these photos in beautiful Edwards Gardens which is a botanical garden in Toronto that was once an estate garden. The grounds of Edwards Gardens are stunning and everywhere you turn there are different types of plants, all with their own varying textures. The history of Edwards Gardens was that the area was settled on by Alexander Milne in 1817. He was a Scottish weaver and the grounds were successfully used as a farm and mill operation for over a century, even expanding up to 240 hectares in size. In the year 1944 the proprietor Rupert E. Edwards purchased the original 11 hectare Milne residence and over the years added many landscape features to the garden including rockery, ponds, rustic bridges and flower beds. He also added a 9 hole golf course. The vision of Mr. Edwards was to see the gardens eventually become a public park. His vision eventually came true when in 1955 the property was purchased by Metropolitan Toronto who have maintained the park's character and beauty since then.

I bet you after seeing all the images above you would have never guessed that the photos above were taken during the Canadian Fall. Well if you don't believe me see the image below which was taken in a different part of the garden that featured some maple trees with "fall-ing" leaves (The pun was definitely intended).

So that is the end of my blog post for this week! I would like to thank God for all the blessings he has provided in my life. I am truly grateful to be surrounded by so many amazing people (especially my children). Till the next time, have a great one!

A lovely Afternoon in the Distillery District

Hola! Welcome to another post on my blog! Today I am showcasing my trip to the Distillery District in Toronto. We started off the day by  having an amazing dessert at the stunning El Catrin Restaurant. Afterwards we roamed the Distillery District and stopped by some shops in including the SOMA chocolate shop and a lovely clothing shop called Cop Copine (which had one of the friendliest owners). We ended the day with a little summer tradition of spending time at a local beach.

A little history behind the now pedestrian only neighbourhood of the Distillery District is that it was founded in 1832, and at one point was the largest distillery in the world. The Official Plan currently designates the Distillery district as a mixed-use land parcel. The site is currently recognized as a national historic site and this is in part due to it comprising of 40 of North America's best preserved Industrial Victorian buildings. Today the area is comprised of boutiques, galleries, restaurants, cafes and residential dwellings in the form of condos. All this makes for one of the most vibrant spots in the city of Toronto during the weekends and holidays!

After we finished touring the Distillery district we headed East of the city to visit Woodbine beach, which is one of the more popular spots in Toronto during the summer. The day we visited certainly indicated the popularity of the beach as it was packed (we could barely find parking ) with people wading in the waters, playing volleyball and picking up sun tans.

Well Thank you for visiting my website and viewing my latest blog post! I hope that you have been inspired  and that you will also take the time to go visit the Distillery District if you are ever in beautiful Toronto.

An Introduction To The KMA Team

Hello Everyone! Winter has finally arrived in Toronto. It is snowing as I type and I realize how special this city is. Every season has its magic and today it is all  covered with white snow and the joy of the holidays is all around.

Today’s  blogpost however takes us to a few months back when I was in Costa Rica with my  team. KMA stands for Katia Marten Arquitectos. It is the architectural firm I founded 35 years ago in my home country.  My team is the heart of the office so I am dedicating this blog to them. The wonderful photos were taken by a special friend and  photographer, Mr. Rodrigo Montoya. It includes photos of the team at the KMA office and the grounds surrounding the building where it is situated. The building was designed by the late great architect from Mexico, Mr. Ricardo Legoretta. He was famous for his linear type designs and use of bright colours. These elements were influenced by his teacher the famous architect, Mr. Luis Barragan.  We are fortunate to have KMA located in such a beautiful building that inspires our team of architects and designers each day.

Two Shops I Adore!

Hey Everyone! My latest blogpost is a special one as it focuses on two of the shops I absolutely love in the downtown of Toronto! I encourage you to check out  these wonderful shops!

DAVID'S TEA

www.davidstea.com

If you are a tea fan like I am then you will find that a visit to a David's Tea store will have you feeling like a kid in a candy store! There is so much variety that I sometimes have to take a good period of time just to choose the one I will purchase.

NEAT

http://store.neatspace.ca/

Neat is the other store that I really like. It is such a gem of a store! They carry uniquely designed household items that are sourced from all over the world! They describe themselves as having "a design aesthetic that is modern, urban, and contemporary". Check out the pantone chairs in one of the images below. How fun!

Well this concludes my latest blogpost! I really do hope you will visit the two stores mentioned if you are ever in the downtown area of Toronto! Make an afternoon trip out of it! Until next time love and light always!

A Visit with Friends to the Royal Ontario Museum and the UofT Campus

Hola! It's been a beautiful past few weeks in Toronto. The weather has been amazing and  I was very fortunate to have two of my team members and friends  visit me from Costa Rica!  I took them around the city   to one of the most striking buildings in Toronto.

SITE: Royal Ontario Musuem

ARCHITECTS:  Darling and Pearson (original building)  and subsequently Daniel Libeskind (Micheal Lee-Chin Crytal Structure)

PHOTOGRAPHY: Karimah Gheddai www.karimahgheddai.com

The Royal Ontario Museum was created in March 19, 1914. It has been a pride for Toronto ever since and a beacon for cultural activities in the city! The original brick and terracotta building was designed by Toronto based architects Darling and Pearson. In the year 2007 the Royal Ontario Museum opened a mesmerizing crystalline-form addition to the building known as the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal. This new addition was designed by starchitect Daniel Libeskind.

ROYAL ONTARIO MUSUEM

I just love spending time with friends!

Clearly we were having too much fun hehe

We took a quick peek into the interior of the building where the lobby area and the ticket sales were located.

Those lights are quite interesting!

I loved the unique design of the windows!

Back outside, we took to some more photos against the beautiful backdrop.

Look at the sky and the contrast with the building form!

Where the original building beside meets the crystal form.

GARDINER MUSUEM

After the ROM we walked across the street to the Gardiner Museum.

The Gardiner Museum is Canada's national ceramics museum that. it was founded in 1984 by George and Helen Gardiner to house their collection of ceramic art. The building was originally designed by Keith Wagland. I was interested in going to the building to see the giant six foot tall zebra striped ceramic head that was sculpted by Jun Kaneko and installed in 2002.

The Gang

After having some fun taking pics by the Gardiner museum we used the underground pass to head over to the UofT grounds

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO GENERAL GROUNDS

I love to cuddle up with cute dogs!!!

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO - TRINITY WESTERN COLLEGE

Our intention was to just roam the uoft grounds but we got sucked into going inside this building after some passing visitors generated our curiosity

What a strikingly beautiful interior!

After all the exploring we were exhausted and headed back towards my car but in between we found a gorgeous willow tree that was the backdrop to this beautiful portrait.

I don't which version I love more but black and white always looks so classic and timeless.

Well that brings me to the end of this blogpost! It really was a fun day spending time with friends! Untill next time love and light always!

A stroll through Downtown Toronto

Hi Lovely people! This week my blog post is on my trip to the downtown area of Toronto. It included stops in a number of public spaces and buildings along Queen Street just a short distance from the Eaton Centre. It was a beautiful sunny day and lots of people were enjoying the warm weather.

LOCATIONS:

OLD CITY HALL (Completed 1899)

ARCHITECT: E.J Lennox

TORONTO CITY HALL (Opened 1965)

ARCHITECT: Viljo Revel

NATHAN PHILLIPS SQUARE (Opened 1965)

ARCHITECT: Viljo Revel

OSGOODE HALL (Opened 1979)

ARCHITECT: John Ewart and W.W Baldwin

OLD CITY HALL

This was a fascinating historical building with so many intricate details! One could spend a good minute examining the doors and pillars due to the amount of details featured in their design.

Click on the marker in the map above to get the exact location of the site!

NATHAN PHILLIPS SQUARE AND TORONTO CITY HALL

Nathan Phillips square sits in front of Toronto City Hall. It is A semi vibrant public space. I loved some parts of the square; such as the TORONTO sign that was added last year for the PanAmerican games of which the city was host to. However I really felt that more could be done to spruce up the site and reach its greatest potential. Maybe a future project proposal?

This grey textured concrete wall however was a perfect backdrop for some portrait shots!

At the front of the plaza area one could take a fairly unused staircase up to a platform where you could get a nice view of the plaza at Nathan Phillips square, Toronto City Hall, Old City Hall and the adjacent Queen Street all in a 360 turn and in an uninterrupted solace.

What a beautiful view of Nathan Phillips Square!

Love the TORONTO sign! It really has made the square a landmark.

The stage at Nathan Phillips square that plays host to events such as the Jazz festival and New Year's Day Celeberation concerts.

Unique Sculpture

INSIDE NEW CITY HALL

I ventured into the foyer of City Hall to see what it was all about and was met to my left with a gorgeous model of the downtown Toronto area. To my right was a peculiar but beautiful wall art/ sculpture that seemed to be made of Nails.

Click on the marker in the map above to get the exact location of the site!

PEACE GARDEN

Back outside and adjacent to Nathan Phillips Square is the " Peace Garden" which was initially located in the middle of the square and was created in 1984 as an affirmation of then mayor Art Eggleton's administration declaring Toronto as a "nuclear-free zone" . It is interesting to note that the garden itself was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II.

Click on the marker in the map above to get the exact location of the site!

Toronto Courthouse

On our way to the Osgoode Hall we passed through the Toronto Courthouse and surrounding landscapes. There was not much that stood out to me. It was a very passive space.

Click on the marker in the map above to get the exact location of the site!

OSGOODE HALL

Osgoode Hall was our final stop. Tucked away and protected by a fence protecting it and its grounds from the hustle and bustle of the city. This building was designed in the late georgian/ palladian and neoclassical styles. Just like old city hall there was an immense amount of detailing put into the building's facade. The grounds of the Osgoode hall offer visitors a quiet area to recharge and relax amonsgt beautiful greenery and planting.

So that concludes my blogpost for this week! Hope you enjoyed it. As always wishing you love and light!

A Visit to the Aga Khan Museum

SITE: Aga Khan Museum and the Ismaili Centre, Toronto, Ontario

ARCHITECTS: Fumihiko Maki (Aga Khan Museum)  and  Charles Correa (Ismaili Centre) in collaboration with Toronto based architecture Firm Moriyama Teshima

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT: Vladimir Djurovic

PHOTOGRAPHY: Karimah Gheddai www.karimahgheddai.com

Hello Everyone! This week's blog post features a trip to the most magnificent Aga Khan Museum. It was not my first time going here, however I just love this museum so much that I had to return! This particular day however we found the museum was not open but we still had a wonderful time exploring the wonderful landscapes of the museum as well as admiring the building's facades.

The Aga Khan Museum is home to a collection of Islamic artifacts and heritage pieces. It opened in the year 2014 and since then has become a popular attraction in the city of Toronto partly due to it's striking architecture.

The landscape of the Aga Khan Museum is just as striking as the architecture. It is a formal garden featuring elegant reflective pools that utilize black granite. Gravel lined walkways invite guests to roam around the grounds in a modern space that feels so peaceful. Trees have been strategically placed near the reflective pools to soften the landscape. The landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic has described his design as one that "captures the essence of the Islamic garden and translates it into an expression that reflects its context and contemporary age"

If you would like to find out more about the Aga Khan Museum then simply go to their website at  www.agakhanmuseum.org

The dramatic entrance to the museum featuring a lovely cantilevered overhang on the building and linear two toned pavers on the ground.

Powerful interruptions in the architectural planes result in a unique architecture

A view of the reflective pool

The adjacent Ismaili Centre was designed by the late great Indian architect Charles Correa who utilized the concept of sacred geometry in his design of the building. To see more of his work. See his website HERE

This place just makes me feel so happy!

The expressive cantilevered overhang at the entrance of the building.

These planters were the perfect pop of colour to the outdoor space.

Well I hope you enjoyed my latest blog post touring the grounds of the Aga Khan Museum! If you would like more information on the outfit I wore to this outing then please check out the style section of my blog by clicking HERE

Until next time wishing you love and light always!

Creating My Own Doors Open Route

This week's blog post recaps my Doors Open Toronto trip that never really happened. Well it did happen, it's just that we didn't exactly follow any particular routes or go inside many of the buildings we initially intended to but it turned out to be a great day regardless. We started off in Regent Park  where I was supporting a friend who was leading a musical recital and then we ended up in the financial district of Downtown Toronto to check out some of the buildings there.

REGENT PARK

Located in downtown Toronto, Regent Park is a neighbourhood that has in recent years seen many changes and re-development. The residential neighbourhoods used to consist entirely of social housing but now through a number of redevelopment changes is slowly becoming a mixed income neighbourhood and more social amenities have been provided for residents including the Daniels Spectrum building and the Regent Park Aquatic centre.

Click on the marker in the map above to get the exact location of the site!

REGENT PARK AQUATIC CENTRE

Architects: MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects

The Regent Park Aquatic Centre was completed in the year 2012. The building is 28,000 square feet and has become a focal point for the community. The aquatic centre has a modern design with an impressive interior roof in the swimming pool area.

Unique Seating that works well with the space

Click on the marker in the map above to get the exact location of the site!

BROOKFIELD PLACE AND THE ALLEN LAMBERT GALLERIA

Architects: Bregman + Hamann Architects and Engineers and Santiago Calatrava

Located in the heart of the financial district Brookfield Place has been described as "One of North America's truly great people places". Many of the world's most prestigous financial, commercial and legal firms are located within the vicinity as well as the Hockey Hall of Fame!

The Allen Lambert galleria is located within of Brookfield Place , it is an atrium designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The six storey high pedestrian avenue is structured by eight freestanding supports on each side of the Galleria. It is a great place to take photographs!

LUNCH AT MARCHE

As it was mid afternoon we decided to stop for lunch at the closest place we could find and just by luck happened upon a restaurant called Marche. It is a market style restaurant located within Brookfield Place and it had a wide array of  delicious items ranging from meats, to pizzas to crepes (made in front of your eyes!) and a great selection of fresh juices. The food was delicious and I would definitely recommend people have a meal there.

Click on the marker in the map above to get the exact location of the site!

ROAMING AROUND THE FINANCIAL DISTRICT

We did not have the mind set to go into any particular building but rather just walked around and explored the area. We happened upon some amazing building facades!

TEMBO- MOTHER OF ELEPHANTS

We came across this public art piece designed by Derrick S. Hudson. Weighing almost as much as 80 people or six automobiles, the enormous mother elephant is one of the largest bronze elephants in the world.

Click on the marker in the map above to get the exact location of the site!

DESIGN EXCHANGE

One of the Door Open Toronto venues that we were able to check out was the Design Exchange. It was by chance that we ended up inside the building after noticing a door's open sign outside. There were some vintage pieces on display and they had a neat little exhibit on display.

Click on the marker in the map above to get the exact location of the site!

TORONTO DOMINION CENTRE

I was very impressed by this building and of course when I found out it was designed by the late great architect Mies Van Der Rowe I was not too surprised. It just has a striking quality about it.

Click on the marker in the map above to get the exact location of the site!

OASIS PARK (not the real name of the park).

Located across from the TD Building was a beautiful park with a waterfall wall and a few seating tables that made it a great spot for a break or if one was to be taking a lunch break from work. I wish I knew the name of the park as it was quite nice. I guess I will just have to return and find out.

FIRST CANADIAN PLACE

Architects: Bregman + Hamann Architects
Edward Durell Stone & Associates

Located across from the TD Building . This was my favourite building throughout our excursion that day! I really loved the thought put into the design, textures and facade of the building. Cararra Marble was initially  used in the exterior cladding of the building however due to safety concerns (one of the panels fell off a number of years ago) it was re-cladded in white ceramic frit with the corners in a  bronze tint and it is simply gorgeous!

The thought put into the use of  textures on the building's exterior was beautiful to see!

AAhh this roof! My favourite photo from the entire day!

Well this is the end of my blog post for this week and I am super happy that you were able to read it! I hope you will join me for another blog post in the coming weeks! Till then have a wonderful day . Love and Light always!
